Rectangular Roman shield "Scutum" in painted wood, with the colors and logo of the 10th Roman legion called "Fretensis", used to maneuver in the eastern maritime provinces and particularly, in the 1st century, in Judea Samaria Palestine.

The 10th Legion had several emblems. In the first century, it was mainly the "Galley" and the "Boar" that were jointly represented to illustrate the 10th Legion.

The curved shield is made mainly of wood, with a central iron reinforcement (umbo) that served to deflect main sword attacks, as well as iron and bronze strapping.
The shields were usually finely decorated, as was discovered with an exceptionally well-preserved model from Dura-Europos (present-day Syria) during the fall of the city after the siege by the Sassanids.
